DODO (2023)
Herbal Moxibustion Healthcare Device
Overview
<DODO> is a home healthcare device designed to reinterpret traditional moxibustion through a contemporary and user friendly experience.
The project combines oriental medicine, aromatherapy, and interaction design to create a therapeutic device tailored for everyday home use.
Users can select from six herbal capsules based on different physical conditions, allowing personalized treatment and sensory interaction through heat, light, and scent.
The project began with research into modern chronic diseases and the growing demand for home-based healthcare solutions. Traditional oriental medicine was explored not only as a treatment method, but also as a system focused on long-term prevention, balance, and body awareness.
User Analysis
To determine the optimal size and placement of the device, body scanning and anthropometric research were conducted using Korean body measurement datasets.
The abdomen was selected as the primary interaction area due to its accessibility and relationship to multiple therapeutic pressure points.

Technical Details
The circular structure references the flow and circulation concepts found in oriental medicine, while also supporting ergonomic body interaction.
The device consists of multiple modular components including:
- Upper and lower casing
- Heating plate
- Infrared sensor
- LED panel
- Ventilation system
- Herbal cartridge mount
- Silicone and synthetic rubber exterior materials
The transparent middle layer allows users to visually perceive heat and operation status during use, enhancing both usability and sensory experience. The heating system maintains a safe therapeutic temperature range between 45–60°C while preventing direct skin burns.
Visual Identity
Each herbal treatment capsule was paired with its own visual identity and narrative system.
The project aimed to transform healthcare from a purely functional activity into a more emotional and narrative-driven experience.
Examples include:
-
Sea Breeze — digestive relief
-
Starry Night — neurological relaxation
-
Blooming Days — fatigue recovery
-
Under the Forest — respiratory care
By combining industrial design, healthcare research, and immersive interaction design, DODO proposes a new approach to home wellness experiences that bridges traditional medicine and contemporary technology.
