Unseen Orchestra (2026)

Interactive Sound Experience at Horniman Museum & Gardens

Overview

COLLABORATION
Horniman Museum & Gardens × RCA Information Experience Design

Unseen Orchestra is an interactive sound experience developed in collaboration with Horniman Museum & Gardens and RCA Information Experience Design. Visitors explore the garden to discover hidden QR markers, each revealing a different organism and its sound. As these individual sounds are collected and shared, they gradually come together as a collective orchestra. Combining digital interaction, sound and physical interventions within the landscape, the project invites visitors to listen more closely to the unseen lives around them and explore ideas of care, connection and coexistence.

Concept Discovering What Usually Goes Unnoticed
SOUND · HIDDEN LIVES · CARE · CO-EXISTENCE

Rather than simply guiding visitors through the garden, Unseen Orchestra turns exploration into an act of discovery. Hidden QR markers become small clues embedded within the landscape, encouraging visitors to slow down, look more closely, and notice organisms they might otherwise pass by.

Each QR code represents a different organism and acts as an entry point to its sound. Instead of revealing exact locations, the experience provides approximate hints, allowing visitors to search, discover and gradually uncover the orchestra themselves.

How It Works From Ecosystem to Orchestra
EXPLORE  →  FIND  →  SCAN  →  LISTEN  →  COLLECT

Rather than simply guiding visitors through the garden, Unseen Orchestra turns exploration into an act of discovery. Hidden QR markers become small clues embedded within the landscape, encouraging visitors to slow down, look more closely, and notice organisms they might otherwise pass by.

Each garden zone is connected to its ecological characteristics and typical organisms. These organisms are translated into different orchestral sections and individual sound identities, creating a unique soundscape for each area of the garden.

Digital Experience A Digital Guide Through the Garden

The mobile application guides visitors through the garden using approximate location clues. By finding and scanning hidden QR markers, visitors reveal different organisms, unlock their sounds, and gradually build the orchestra.
