Immersive VR Experience Reinterpreting Eastern Philosophy

Overview

<Sunghaksipdo VR>is an immersive virtual reality project inspired by Toegye Yi Hwang’s Ten Diagrams on Sage Learning, reinterpreting Eastern philosophy through interactive digital environments.

The project explores how ancient philosophical concepts can be translated into spatial, sensory, and experiential forms using VR technology. Rather than delivering philosophy through text alone, the experience invites participants to physically move through symbolic environments and reflect on their relationship with nature, existence, and the world around them.

VR Environment

The VR experience guides participants through a sequence of meditative environments designed around Eastern philosophical principles.

Users encounter symbolic spatial transitions, floating structures, reflective surfaces, and environmental interactions that encourage slow movement and contemplation.

One of the primary environments was designed as an expansive ice cave, where the surrounding frozen landscape functions as a metaphorical mirror for introspection and existential reflection.

Collaboration &
Development

The project explored how VR could move beyond entertainment and function as a philosophical and emotional medium through:

  • Spatial immersion
  • Minimal environmental interaction
  • Sound-based atmosphere
  • Slow temporal pacing
  • Collective meditative participation

Exhibition

The project was demonstrated through a multi-user VR experience installation, allowing participants to collectively engage with philosophical and meditative content inside an immersive virtual environment.

Sunghaksipdo VR explored the possibility of using immersive technology not only for visual spectacle, but also as a medium for contemplation, emotional reflection, and philosophical storytelling.
